Z Cam S1 Review

Image of the z cam s1 professional 360 vr camera

The Z Cam S1 professional 360 VR camera is a very powerful tool for immersive content creation. It packs a punch and has a lot of great quality features that most professional 360 cameras do not have.

Z Cam S1 – Professional 360 VR Camera

The Z Cam S1 was a successful Indiegogo campaign that raised around $400,000 on Nov 19, 2016. There was a need in the professional 360 VR camera market and I think they met the expectations.

Software

A self stitching optical flow based stitching software solution is available once plugging in the camera into a computer. If you are wanting to live stream you also get the Z CAM WonderStitch software specifically used for real time stitching for live streaming. Imagine Vision also has a unique feature with an open API for developers. Not very many professional 360 cameras have their own open sourced API for developers. See an example video stitching workflow of the Z Cam S1 software Wonderstitch.

Battery Life

4 x 18650 Li-ion rechargeable battery cells give the Z Cam S1 up to 120 min of recording time. There is also a AC/DC power adapter socket on the bottom of the camera.

Camera Details

The cameras have a lot of power in them. Each has a Ambarella A9 S75 processor, a Sony EXMOR CMOS image sensor and an all glass 190 degree fisheye lens. Camera exposure and white balance are coordinated automatically. The synchronization of the sensors is also automatic with the built in sync hardware solution.

Output resolution captured to each SD cards is 4k @ 60fps or 2.7k @ 60fps. So when completely stitched the output is 4k @ 60FPS / 6k @ 30fps.

Overview

Overall the camera package is pretty reasonable for the quality it is delivering. Video resolutions are 4k @ 60 fps and 6k @ 30 fps which is the average for cameras around the $5,000 price point. I think the biggest plus of this is the live streaming capabilities included with the software bundle called WonderStitch. I believe the GoPro Omni’s max video resolution is actually 8k @ 30 fps which is at the higher end of most professional cameras in the $5,000 price range. Compare this with the Insta360 Pro camera or the Kandao Obsidian package which is at $5,000.

Recent News

At 2017 NAB Z Cam V1 Pro was announced to ship in May 2017 for $30,000-40,000.

Update : Z Cam S1 has been Live360 Facebook certified for Live 360 Facebook streaming.
